 Ladan. Pozhspetsmash | Ladan, Pryluky Region, is a settlement (6,700 residents) on the high right indented bank of Udai River. According to an old story, before Christianity, on the very site of the settlement there was a heathen temple of Lado (Rus god of merriment, love and welfare). For the first time Ladan was mentioned in 1619, but Ladan Monastery of the Patronage was founded on the slopes of the river valley as early as in l603.After I6l9the monastery became a convent. The Patronage cathedral (1763) is the architectural pivot of the monastery. Both it and the St. Nicholas Church (19thc.) with cells feature many signs of excruciating history of the monastery. For the first time it was closed down in 1786, but it revived in 1817. The Soviet officials closed it down for the second and last time. In 1923 they organized the first district Komsomol agricultural commune. In 1938, they began constructing the FSU only fire-engine plant. The same year Ladan became a settlement. |
